Programs Supported by the Foundation for National Progress

The Mother Jones Investigative Fund (MJIF) is the general fund for the Foundation for National Progress (FNP), a 501 (c)(3) public-interest media organization. The FNP's mission is to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach seeks to inform and inspire a more just and democratic world. The FNP achieves its mission through the following projects:

Mother Jones magazine

The flagship project of the FNP, Mother Jones magazine was launched in February 1976 to provide a diverse national audience with investigative journalism and thoughtful, progressive analysis of critical issues. Within the first four years, Mother Jones received three National Magazine Awards, one for their expose of the dangerously defective Ford Pinto, leading to the largest auto recall in United States history.

Now approaching its 25th anniversary, Mother Jones remains committed to the highest standard public-interest reporting, with a strong emphasis on environmental and social justice concerns. Paid circulation is at a ten-year high, surpassing 165,000 in the first half of 2000.

To stay healthy and keep our editors independent of commercial pressures, Mother Jones depends on contributions from supporters. Tax-deductible contributions underwrite the high costs and long development times of investigative reporting.

Mother Jones Internship Program

Since 1980, Mother Jones has provided editorial internships to aspiring journalists. Interns work side-by-side with senior magazine and MotherJones.com editors fact-checking, reporting, and writing original reported stories.

Since the program's inception, Mother Jones has given more than 250 students and graduates intensive real-world experience in the essentials of investigative journalism. The success of the program is evidenced in the careers of its alumni. Mother Jones interns and fellows have gone on to prominent positions in journalism at the New York Times, Newsweek, Time, The Los Angeles Times, CBS News, Reuters, National Public Radio, and many other print and broadcast news media.

Individual and foundation financial support has allowed the internship program to become one of the most respected and well-recognized journalism internship programs in the country.
