The Centennial State is big on gaming, with a lottery, pari-mutuel betting at horse and dog tracks and at off-track betting sites, charitable bingo and raffles, Indian casinos, and "limited stakes" non-Indian casinos in the towns of Cripple Creek, Black Hawk, and Central City. Since a constitutional amendment to allow gambling (slots, blackjack, and poker only, with a $5 maximum bet) in those towns was approved by voters in 1990, casinos and other gambling interests have dropped at least $182,423 into state elections from 1992-96, according to a database search by Common Cause of Colorado.

For a closer look at donation activity, see our searchable database of information for the 1996 election season from the Western States Center. You'll see groups like the Black Hawk Casino Association and the Black Jack PAC giving hefty sums to the individual candidates, as well as numerous donations to the suspiciously-named PAC Citizens Against Statewide Casinos.
