SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV)
In April 1993 (no exact date given), Sen. Reid purchased an "additional interest in approximately 57 acres of Patent Survey # 2605." The total amount of his purchase was between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars. According to Nevada property records, Sen. Reids claim is described as: PT MS#2605 PT SECS 27,34-28-63 PANAMERICAN TELLURIDE SANTA FE.
On April 5, 1993, the Senate introduced S. 775: HARDROCK MINING REFORM ACT...To modify the requirements applicable to locatable minerals on public lands, consistent with the priciples of self-initiation of mining claims (Referred to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee). This bill was the Republican (and mining-interested Democrats) answer to President Clinton's "attack on the mining industry."
According to an April 6, 1993 article in National Journal's Congress Daily, S. 775 "...closely mirrors a measure by Sens. Harry Reid, D-Nev, and Pete Domenici, R-NM. that was floated as an amendment to an appropriations bill last year. Reid was preparing to release a similar alternative reform proposal several weeks ago, but so far has held out; industry and environmental sources say he fears embarrassing the administration."
Sen. Reid signed onto S. 775 as a co-sponsor on May 5, 1993.
NOTES: Sen. Reid is # 10 on the Senate Appropriations Committee; he is # 6 on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior; he is # 4 on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee; he is # 3 on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
