REP. KWEISI MFUME (D-MD)

On November 6, 1991, Rep. Mfume purchased between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars worth of stock in Black Entertainment Television.

On the same day, November 6, a bill was introduced in the House that, if passed, could help BET.

The bill was 1991 H.R. 3715: TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCAST BULK TIME SALE ACT OF 1991. This bill was designed to require the Federal Communications Commission to prescribe regulations governing the use of BTSAs. Apparently, the motive for introducing the bill was stop large programmers from squeezing minority programmers with unregulated BTSAs.

POLITICAL MONEY NOTES: From September 1992 thru May 1993, Rep. Mfume has accepted $1,000 in campaign contributions from Robert L. Johnson; Chairman, President and CEO of Black Entertainment Television.

NOTES: Rep. Mfume is # 1 on the House Subcommittee on Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development.
