REP. MARGE ROUKEMA (R-NJ)

On March 5, 1992, Rep. Roukema purchased between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars worth of stock in Bristol Meyers Squibb and between 15,000 and 50,000 dollars worth of stock in Merck.

On the same day, March 5, a bill was introduced by a democratic member of the New Jersy delegation (Rep. Frank Guarini), that, if passed, would affect both Bristol Meyers and Merck.

The bill was 1992 H.R. 4401: EXTENSION OF SUSPENSION OF DUTY ON TAMOXIFEN CITRATE. Tamoxifen (brand name-- Nolvadex) is a drug used to treat cancer (breast cancer) and is produced by the British firm Zeneca. Both Bristol Meyers and Merck are fierce competitors of Zeneca in the area of cancer drug treatment, and would stand to gain strategically if import duties were placed on Tamoxifen.

POLITICAL MONEY NOTES: From August 1991 thru September 1993, Rep. Roukema has accepted $2,000 in campaign contributions from Merck's PAC. From December 1991 thru December 1993, Rep. Roukema has accepted $1,500 in campaign contributions from Bristol Meyers' PAC.

NOTES: Rep. Roukema is # 4 on the House Subcommittee on International Development, Finance, Trade and Monetary Policy.
