SEN. SAM NUNN (D-GA)

  • On May 4, 1993, Sen. Nunn's wife purchased between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars worth of stock in Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

On the same day (May 4), a bill was introduced in the Senate that could cause Ms. Nunn's business and Royal Caribbean some concern. The bill was, S. 885: CONGRESSIONAL ETHICS REFORM ACT (Referred to Sen. Nunn's Senate Governmental Affairs Committee). This bill would limit the acceptance of gifts, meals and travel by Members of Congress and their staff. I assume this bill would also include junkets.

Ms. Nunn is a partner in Hayes, Domenici and Nunn. This group of congressional wives is a public relations and special-event planning firm. Interestingly enough, they put together parties and special events for politicians (and other VIPs) with corporate and lobbyist funding.

Ms. Nunn sold her stock in Royal Caribbean on June 24, 1993.

  • Ms. Nunn reports selling 100 shares of Snapple Beverages (valued between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars) on January 25, 1993. However, there is no reported purchase of any stock in Snapple on Sen. Nunn's 1992 financial disclosure form. Snapple went public on December 15, 1992.

What gives here??? This is the second time a Member is involved in selling Snapple without ever having purchased the stock. Speaker Tom Foley was the first case of this.

NOTES: Sen. Nunn is # 2 on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee.
