REP. THOMAS BALLENGER (R-NC)

On January 1, 1993, Rep. Ballenger purchased between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars worth of stock in Freeport McMoran.

Four days later (on January 5, 1993), a bill was introduced in the House that might concern Freeport McMoran. The bill was H.R. 322: MINERAL EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT ACT...To modify the requirements applicable to locatable minerals on public domain lands, consistent with the principles of self-initiation on mining claims (Referred to the House Natural Resources Committee; last action on June 29, 1994).

VOTE NOTES: On November 16, 1993, Rep. Ballenger voted with the mining industry on four different amendments to H.R. 322 (Roll #'s 568, 569, 570 and 571). On November 18, 1993, Rep. Ballenger voted NAY on H.R. 322. Following passage of the bill, Rep. Ballenger then voted AYE on the Crapo motion to recommit H.R. 322 to the Committee on Natural Resources, with instructions to report it back forthwith containing recommendations that will result in no net loss of jobs as measured by existing Department of Interior economic models; the Crapo motion was rejected.
