Hard Truth of the Day

Apparently some Turks' need to deny the Armenian genocide is just as great as our need to deny the genocide of American Indians. Seventy percent of U.S. air cargo and 30 percent of fuel headed for Iraq passes through Turkey. Telling the truth would make it harder to make war.

I have researched this issue a lot, have you? Shame on Mother Jones, I expect a lot more from da "Mother" Turkey has officially begged for an independent group of historians and researchers to look into this issue, there was one meeting at a private university, nothing more heard about it. Armenia is pissed off at Turkey because they are in a hassle with a neighbor. The Armenians in the US want to get a piece of Turkey or reparations and just won't let the issue die. The simple fact is there is, at this time, no PROOF of a genocide. Go for it Mother, do your own research and see what you find, send some people to Turkey who can get to the bottom of this debacle...

Mr. Johnny Hogue, I am quite troubled by your comments. Would you point to a historical documents that show there was NO GENOCIDE? My family are survivors of the Genocide. Someone reading Mother Jones, I would assume would have conscience and understanding about the Ottoman Emprire and the Modern Turkey's role as an imperialist in the region. There are at least two reasons why it is important for US to accept the Genocide Bill. First, of course, it is to honor historical accuracy & US heavy involvement (humanitarian aid) in the early 20th century in stopping the genocide. At the time, the US Ambassador Morgenthau & journalists recorded detailed events regarding the atrocities. Woodrow Wilson along with other leaders of the world brought charges against the leaders of the Ottoman Empire. There was a huge trial and they were all convinced of commmitting Genocide. In fact, an American linguist Rafael Lemkin, holocaust survivor, when he first coined the word "Genocide" he referred it to what happened between 1915-1920. Second, this would send a huge message to the world, especially Turkey, being one of the biggest america's ally, that they just can't get away with what they did do their neighbor.

Mr. Hogue, How could you even say that this DENIAL should just DIE? Should we just let countries get away with mass-cleansing and be rewarded for it? Reparations -- WHY NOT?!?!?! Japanese Americans got reparations. Native Ameicans too (well, sort of.) If you have researched this issue a LOT, as you allege, you would know about the Treaty Sèvres. Acquiring the Old Armenia back will never happen because too much time has lapsed and there are number of reasons that makes it impossible. BUT WHY NOT APOLOGY? WHY NOT REPARATIONS especially when things were forcefully, illegally taken from us and genocide committed? I really want to read about your feedback & your research.

Samantha Power's Pulitzer Prize-winning book "A problem from Hell" starts with this as the template for future ethnic exterminations. Calling it "genocide" makes it different. It describes the intent, which carries its own very deep obscenity. Turks as well as Americans, need to know the truth. That makes us stronger. And most important, it will better enable us to discuss the topic when necessary. And it frequently is, alas.

Mr Hogues remark are more of a comment on the history, or rather the lack of a truthful history, we are allowing our children to taught in school. Aren't we still teaching our grade schoolers that we killed off all of the great plains buffalo for coats & hats for the fashionable folks in Boston & New York? But don't mention the fact we killed off the bison to starve the plains natives. Do we still teach our kids that we gave blankets to the natives help keep them warm in the winter? And not dare mention the blankets were infested with smallpox and other diseases to which the natives had no immunity? History is being re-written as we read!
