Brodner's Person of the Day: Abbas and Olmert

March 3, 2008

Yesterday's piece in the Washington Post is pretty sobering. Talking of an all-out Mideast war, where one homemade rocket hits Israel, who then moves troops into Gaza. Then Syria, Hezbolla, and Iran start attacking. So here are Abbas and Olmert apparently close to a deal: negotiated peace with a 2-state solution. But the rockets did come in killing 3 Israelis. Israel then, in response, leveled part of Gaza with a one-ton bomb, killing over 100 men, women, and children. Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer reports burning flesh, limbs, fingers lying everywhere. The UN secretary general has denounced the raid as "disproportionate." Eight years of indifferent, incompetent, and ideological policymaking by the U.S. has contributed to this. Sometimes fingers don’t point, they just stare.

And, P.S., today Ahmadinejad makes his grand entrance into Iraq. Thanking Bush all the way.

Every time the United Nations Security Council begins action on Iran--for its nuclear activities, rocket attacks on Israel escalate. The past few days is no exception.

"though they {the new sanctions} might appear weak, even symbolic, they sent a message to Tehran that even staunch trading partners like Russia and China opposed Tehran's determination to defy the Security Council and continue to enrich uranium."
{end of quote}
The same sequence of events occurred prior to last summer's Lebanon war and a few times in between.
At the height of the first "Gulf War", Saddam shot misses into Israel, believing that however dastardly his actions in invading Kuwait might be seen, the public would not wish to support Israel and the result would be both a grand distraction and a rallying cry--behind him. Had Israel retaliated, Saddam might have gambled right.
"where one homemade rocket hits Israel . . "
Reality check:
About 20,000 rockets were fired at Israel in 2007 and most of them were made in Iran.
"The UN secretary general has denounced the raid as "disproportionate." "
Incorrect. He has denounced the violence (both sides), stated that the rocket attacks were wrongful provocations and that Israel's response was "disproportionate". To that statement, I agree. However, what would the USA do after the 20,000th rocket was fired at So. Florida from Cuba? PARKING LOT.
What would Russia do? PAVED PARKING LOT. What would China do? PARKING GARAGE. Everyone becomes very magnanimous when it comes to other people's civilian targets.
Earlier today, the false quotes were stating that the Secretary General was condemning Israel--and no mention was made of the provocations.
If someone could explain to me how they get high off of Jew-hating, I might try it, as so many people seem wasted on hitting this pipe.

The way Hamas is going about their attacks is pretty slick. They launch attacks from locations populated with lots of civilians. Israel has no choice but to retaliate and those civilians become victims. Then when the "useful idiots" cry out that the attacks are disproportionate and excessive, the evil Hamas looks good, while people trying to survive look like the bad guys. This further emboldens Hamas as demonstrated by Abu Ubaida, who speaks for Hamas's armed wing in Gaza. Abu Ubaida said: "We are capable of sustaining the fight and tolerating (attacks) beyond the expectations of the enemy." Which means they have more civilians to be used as shields or be killed in furthering their cause.
